About the Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

Intent

Physical education is an integral part of what we do at Allscott Meads as we strongly believe that sport and physical activity play a vital role in the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children. We pride ourselves in offering a wide variety of opportunities for all children to participate in a range of sports and physical activities in a safe and supportive environment. We aim for our pupils to be active and healthy members of our community; develop a love for physical activity which will support them in the future. Being active can drastically improve children and adults’ mental health and wellbeing and teaching children a range of activities to participate in aids them in being able to choose what sports and activities they are passionate about. Throughout our curriculum, our pupils will develop a level of competence in physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Implementation

The national curriculum states that a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Our inclusive physical education curriculum progressively develops children’s knowledge, skill and understanding using a wide range of sports and activities. Every pupil has at least two hours of physical activity each week delivered by teachers. All our lessons are inclusive and have a strong emphasis on improving children’s vocabulary to ensure children can access all areas of their learning. The curriculum offers all children a wide variety of opportunities to access a range of sport, build up on their knowledge and develop understanding. Physical Education lessons are taught using progressive schemes of work and curriculum drivers. The curriculum areas are carefully mapped out to build on expected progression through the key stages and allow children to develop a greater depth of learning where they have the opportunities to develop their oracy and physical skills.

The Early Years curriculum focuses on key fundamental movement skills, developing the children’s fine and gross motor skills through imaginative game play and isolated skills. This is then developed further in Key Stage One where children improve cooperation, agility, flexibility and strength through modified gameplay as well as specialist healthy active lifestyles lessons. Key Stage Two expands on this to develop competence in a wide range of sport specific skills such as: athletics, badminton, orienteering and swimming.

In addition to the curriculum, afterschool and lunch time provision are offered. Sports clubs are accessible for all and aim to promote further participation ensuring children are physically active and learn skills for life.

Impact

Physical Education is assessed by teachers against key knowledge and skills after each unit of work has taken place. This forms part of their overall assessment in PE and this is shared with children and parents on their reports. Pupil voice is regularly taken, ensuring that we acknowledge areas of success and address any areas to improve. Some lessons are recorded to support the monitoring and evaluation process. We provide support for the subject leader and teachers in school; providing coaching, team teaching, and CPD as well as sourcing high quality external CPD for staff. The subject leader uses data and monitoring to regularly evaluate the impact of the curriculum on learning in Physical Education and adds changes and new focuses on the Action Plan. Through this, we continually strive forward in providing the best Physical Education curriculum offer for Allscott Meads pupils; supporting them in developing healthy lifestyles for the future.
