Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact
Art at Allscott Meads Primary school is about encouraging creativity, imagination and personal expression. We believe that engaging with art not only inspires children but also helps the develop emotionally and socially. By providing our pupils with a rich Art curriculum, we endeavour to provide them with creative outlets to explore their emotions, develop their resilience and social skills as well as honing their problem solving and creative thinking skills.
As pupils progress, they will learn to think critically and gain a deeper understanding of artistic techniques and the role of art in society. Children will explore how art reflects history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Here at Allscott Meads, we follow the National Curriculum as it provides a broad and balanced curriculum for all.
Within our Nursery and Reception classes, children are immersed in art through Expressive Arts and Design and a carefully planned classroom environment that allows children to freely explore artistic development as well as teacher modelling key skills. Across year 1 to 6, children are provided with lessons which are structured to build on prior learning, with sequences that allow for progression and ensure deeper understanding over time.
In Art, every year group will cover the main 3 strands of the Art and Design Curriculum: drawing, painting and sculpture. In addition to this, we have carefully constructed additional opportunities for pupils to engage in other forms of craft and design including printing, charcoal, chalk and oil pastels. We use the Access Art curriculum to support our curriculum, providing children with meaningful links that strengthen and build connections in learning. Each pupil has a sketchbook where they can practice new skills, experiment, plan and create their own pieces of artwork. At the end of each unit, children will have the opportunity to showcase their artwork and evaluate it. We proudly show off our children’s art achievements through school in the forms of displays, in classrooms, around school and in our community. Our Art lessons introduce a variety and diverse range of artists, designers, architects and craft makers from around the world. We support our pupils through making available a wide range of high-quality resources for them to use in their lessons as well as ensuring that teachers are confident in delivering the learning. We provide our staff with staff meetings, coaching and team teaching, CPD externally and from the LCT to make certain that they can deliver the learning and that pupils have the best opportunities to succeed in that learning in their classrooms.
Our commitment to art extends beyond the classroom, by providing access to a variety of resources and organising events such as gallery visits and art showcases. By embedding art into our long-term plans and linking it to overarching topics, we help pupils to deepen their understanding, apply their knowledge confidently and see the value of art in their lives and communities.
At Allscott Meads, the impact of our art curriculum is measured in several ways to ensure it meets the highest standards and we understand that art cannot be measured in a linear way, and children’s progression in the artistic skills is what is most measurable. Teachers carefully evaluate pupils’ final pieces of artwork against set criteria, alongside formal assessments of their knowledge and skills at the end of each unit. Pupils are also given opportunities to self-assess and peer-assess their work, encouraging reflection and ownership of their progress.
The true impact of our art curriculum extends beyond the final pieces. We focus on pupils retaining the knowledge and skills they have gained, ensuring they can apply these in future learning and creative contexts. This progress is shared with parents through reports, and pupil voice is used to confirm that children enjoy art and can demonstrate their understanding confidently.
